You asked God for wisdom, then you asked a chatbot. Only one of them answered in 3 seconds, and that speed is exactly the problem.
Hebrews 5:13-14
"Everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil." The writer of Hebrews is frustrated, he wants to teach these believers deeper things, but they're stuck on milk, still needing the basics spoon-fed to them after all this time.
What makes someone mature isn't how much they know, it's that their discernment has been trained by constant practice. "Trained" is a gym word, in the original Greek it's where the word gymnasium comes from. Discernment is a muscle. Nobody can do your squats for you, and no coach, app, or plan gives you strength if someone else lifts the weight. Discernment works the same way. Someone else can hand you the answer, but if they did the work of finding it, you get the answer and none of the strength.
To be fair, faithful believers disagree on how much to use AI, many use it well for looking up background on a passage, studying a Greek word, or organizing notes. This isn't an "AI is evil" episode. The mistake is smaller and sneakier than that. It's about what goes first, and what gets replaced.
Lie #1: If It Sounds Biblical, It Must Be True
AI is very good at sounding right, calm, confident, quoting verses. But AI tools can make things up, including verse references that don't say what they claim, delivered in the same assured voice either way. Sounding biblical and being biblical are two different things. If you never open your Bible to check, you won't know which one you got.
Lie #2: Getting the Answer Fast Makes Me Wiser
We live in a world that loves fast, fast food, fast shipping, fast answers. But wisdom has never been fast. Abraham waited years for a son. Moses spent 40 years in the desert before leading anyone. Jesus spent 30 quiet years before three years of ministry. God is not in a hurry to make you mature, the waiting is part of the making. Jump straight to the answer, and you skip the waiting, which is often where God is doing the work.
Lie #3: AI Is Just a Tool, So It Can't Shape Me
A hammer is just a tool too, but if all you have is a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail. Every tool shapes habits, the phone shaped how often we check things, social media shaped comparison. A tool that answers every question in 3 seconds will shape how patient you are with a God who often isn't that fast to answer. The same pattern shows up with food-tracking apps: people who only follow the number on the screen can go years without ever learning what real hunger actually feels like, the tool does the noticing, and the person never builds the awareness. The same thing can happen to the soul.
Emily's Job Offer
Emily, mid-30s, a lifelong Christian, feels stuck and tired of being told to try harder. A good job offer comes in with a Friday deadline. Lying in bed Tuesday night, she opens an AI app and types, "What does the Bible say about taking a new job?" Three seconds later she has five well-written points, each with a verse, one claiming God promises a step of faith always leads to blessing. It sounds so good she feels a wave of peace, says a quick "Lord, bless this," and goes to sleep. The Bible stays on the shelf. She signs by morning.
Three months later she feels further from God than ever. Facing her next hard choice, she doesn't think to pray first, she reaches for her phone. She never looked up that verse about the step of faith. Emily can find answers anytime she wants. She's losing the ability to hear.
Discernment is not an answer you receive. It's a sense you train. Every time you skip the training, you keep the answer and lose the sense. That's the real mistake, not using AI, but letting it go first and do the practice meant to make you mature. You end up with a head full of right answers and a spirit still feeding on milk.
Acts 17:11: The Bereans Tested Paul
The Bereans "received the word eagerly, examining the scriptures daily to see if these things were so," and scripture calls them noble for it. The man preaching to them was Paul, who wrote much of the New Testament, and they still checked. Not distrust, discernment training. If they tested Paul, you can test a chatbot.
The Order: Pray, Read, Test, Tell, Decide
Pray before opening anything, the app, the search bar, a text to a friend. Bring it to God first. It doesn't need to be long, just honest.
Read your Bible yourself, a physical one if possible, not just one handed verse but the whole chapter, asking what it meant in its original context.
Test every answer, from anyone, a pastor, a podcast, an AI, against scripture directly. If something claims to be a verse, look it up and read it in context.
Tell a mature believer you trust. Proverbs says plans succeed with many advisers. A friend who knows you sees things a screen never will.
Then decide whether you even need the tool. If you do, use it as a servant, for background or organizing, just don't let it go first.
Emily, the Second Time
Months later, facing another decision, Emily stops before reaching for her phone. She prays for 10 minutes, writes down what she's feeling, reads all of Philippians 4, and calls a friend to pray with her. She finally looks up that earlier verse about the step of faith, it's a real reference, about something else entirely. The promise she built her peace on was made up. It takes her a week this time, slower, but when she says yes to leading the small group, she knows why. She feels closer to God than she has in a long time, not because she got a better answer, but because she was part of finding it.
If you're walking through grief, depression, anxiety, or something genuinely dark, please don't make AI your pastor or counselor. Talk to your pastor, a licensed counselor, or your doctor.
The Bottom Line
Tools can help you see. They can never pay attention for you. That part is yours, and it's a gift.
